3、scussed.Finally,examplesofculturalandsocialcapitalineducationalcontextswillbegiventoillustratetheglobalrelevanceoftheconcepts.1.THECONCEPTSOFCULTURALANDSOCIALCAPITALTheconceptsofculturalandsocialcapitalhavebecomecriticalforsociologicalresearchinthelasttwodecades.Thetwocon
4、ceptsarecloselyrelated,andbotharepartofafamilyofconceptshavingtodowithvariousformsofcapital.AccordingtoBourdieu(1986)“Capitalisaccumulatedlabor...which,whenappropriatedonaprivate,i.e.,exclusive,basisbyagentsorgroupsofagents,enablesthemtoappropriatesocialenergyintheformofr
5、eifiedorlivinglabor”(p.241).Furthermore,asBourdieunotes,capitalhasthepotentialcapacityto“produceprofits”.Inthisseminalpaper,Bourdieuidentifiedfourtypesofcapital:economic,cultural,social,andsymbolic.Theconceptofeconomiccapitalisbestknownandisaformwhichisconvertibleintomone
6、yandpropertyrights.Symboliccapital,whichappearsonlyinafootnoteinBourdieu’sdiscussion,isaformofcapitalwheretheobjectissymbolicallypossessedandreflectedinhabitus,whicharedurableschemesofperceptionandaction(permanentdispositions)(Madigan,2002).Howeveritistheformsofculturalan
