3、gedthemtospellouttheirownunderstanding,confirminghispivotalroleasthesourceandpointofdeparturefortheirideas.JohnCroweRansomstatedinTheNewCriticism,publishedin1941,“DiscussionofthenewcriticismmuststartwithMr.Richards.Thenewcriticismverynearlybeganwithhim.”AllenTatealsoacknowledgedhisin
4、debtednessinhisPrefacetoEssaysofFourDecades:NobodywhoreadI.A.Richards’PracticalCriticismwhenitappearedin1929couldreadanypoemashehadreaditbefore.Fromthattimeononehadtoreadpoetrywithallthebrainsonehadandwithone’sarmsandlegs,aswellaswhat1maybeinsidetheribcage.Inaretrospectiveessay,Clean
5、thBrookstookpainstoexplainhowhisintellectualgrowthbeganinreactionagainstRichards’speculationsinpoetictheory:Ireadhimhard,inpartbecauseIfeltthathehadtoberefuted,andintheprocessoftryingtofindtherefutation--itwasnoteasy,Iquicklydiscovered--Ilearnedagreatdealaboutpoetryandaboutliteraryth
