3、gwithhighstrengthrequiredfortheslattrackcomponentofaircraft.Themicrostructureofthebasematerialandthenitridedlayerwasexaminedbyopticalandscanningelectronmicroscope,andvariousphasespresentweredeterminedbyX-raydiffraction.Variousproperties,suchas,hardness,casedepth,tensile,impact,f
4、atiguepropertiesandcorrosionresistancewereinvestigatedforbothun-nitridedandion-nitridedmaterials.ItisobservedthatthemicrostructureofthecorematerialremainsunalteredandFe4Nisformedinthehardenedsurfacelayerafterionnitridingatallthethreetemperaturesemployed.Surfacehardnessincreasess
5、ubstantiallyafterionnitriding.Surfacehardnessremainsalmostthesamebutcasedepthincreaseswiththeincreaseinionnitridingtemperatureduetogreaterdiffusivityathighertemperatures.Tensilestrength,fatiguestrengthandcorrosionresistanceareimprovedbutductilityandenergyabsorbedinimpacttestdecr
