3、ortheslattrackcomponentofaircraft.Themicrostructureofthebasematerialandthenitridedlayerwasexaminedbyopticalandscanningelectronmicroscope,andvariousphasespresentweredeterminedbyX-raydiffraction.Variousproperties,suchas,hardness,casedepth,tensile,impact,fatiguepropertiesandcorrosionresistancew
4、ereinvestigatedforbothun-nitridedandion-nitridedmaterials.ItisobservedthatthemicrostructureofthecorematerialremainsunalteredandFe4Nisformedinthehardenedsurfacelayerafterionnitridingatallthethreetemperaturesemployed.Surfacehardnessincreasessubstantiallyafterionnitriding.Surfacehardnessremains
5、almostthesamebutcasedepthincreaseswiththeincreaseinionnitridingtemperatureduetogreaterdiffusivityathighertemperatures.Tensilestrength,fatiguestrengthandcorrosionresistanceareimprovedbutductilityandenergyabsorbedinimpacttestdecreaseonionnitriding.Theseresultsareexplainedonthebasisofmicrostruc
