3、odwearresistancealongwithhighstrengthrequiredfortheslattrackcomponentofaircraft.Themicrostructureofthebasematerialandthenitridedlayerwasexaminedbyopticalandscanningelectronmicroscope,andvariousphasespresentweredeterminedbyX-raydiffraction.Variousproperties,suchas,hardn
4、ess,casedepth,tensile,impact,fatiguepropertiesandcorrosionresistancewereinvestigatedforbothun-nitridedandion-nitridedmaterials.ItisobservedthatthemicrostructureofthecorematerialremainsunalteredandFe4Nisformedinthehardenedsurfacelayerafterionnitridingatallthethreetemper
5、aturesemployed.Surfacehardnessincreasessubstantiallyafterionnitriding.Surfacehardnessremainsalmostthesamebutcasedepthincreaseswiththeincreaseinionnitridingtemperatureduetogreaterdiffusivityathighertemperatures.Tensilestrength,fatiguestrengthandcorrosionresistanceareimp
