2、ontheoryandpracticeforconflictprevention.Preventiveapproachestowardsconflictarepeopleandsolution-orientated,peaceandtruth-focusedunlikethe“oldparadigm”whereviolence/war,propaganda,victoryandelitesareatthecruxofthematter.Arecenttrendintheconflictresolutionfieldhas
3、beenincreasedattentionto"transfor-mational"conflictresolutionapproaches,whichpromisebetterresultsinpreventingenduringrivalriesandprotractedconflictsthanapproachesbasedonpositionalnegotiating.Thatmeansmovingbeyondsymptomatictreatmentoftheissuestoanalyzingandconsid
4、eringtheunderlyingrootcausesandpatternsofrelationsthatdrivetheconflictssothatchangeisalsotransformational.Visionarypublicleadershipofcomplexconflictsalsoaimatsuchchangethattouchesondeepassumptions,values,beliefsandbiases.Whiletheliteratureaboutconflictresolutione
5、mphasizesbroadandgenericsourcesofconflictatdifferentlevelsofanalysisandmainly“grand”theories,anexplorationofthesourcesofconflictandcreativealternativesforresolvingitateachlevelseparatelyisrequiredforimprovingsocialrelationsatdifferentlevelsofinteraction,i.e.,inte
6、rpersonal,inter-group,andinternationalinpractice.Sincethelate1990s,thefocushasbeenincreasinglyonconflictsbetweenidentity-basedcommunities,inter-groupdialogue,bi-communaldevelopmentprogramsandcitizen-basedconflictinterventionstrategiesthathaveservedasalternative,n
7、on-governmentalresponsestoprotractedconflicts.Civilsocietyorganizations(NGO/CSO)playacriticalroleinsustainingpeacethroughmultiplefunctionsbothpreandpost-conflictsituations.Theircallforaparadigmshiftfromreactiontopreventionisrecognizedsimultaneouslywithashiftfromt
8、op-downtobottom-upapproach.Nowadays,non-governmentalorganizationshavebeguntoplayasignificantroleinconflictprevention.Advocacyandpublicinterestorganizations,the
