3、irty-eightyearsold,metapromisingtwenty-two-yearoldpoetnamedLordAlfredDouglas(“Bosie”)atateaparty.Thetwobecameextremelyclose.DouglastookgreatpleasureintheinterestshowninhimbyWilde,alreadyamajorliteraryfigure.Douglascalledhiseldercompanion“themostchiva
4、lrousfriendintheworld.”WildesawinDouglasnotonlyalivelyintellect,butayoungmanwithanAdonis-likeappearance.Wildemadenosecretofhisinterest.Douglaslatersaid,“Hewascontinuallyaskingmetolunchanddinewithhimandsendingmeletters,notes,andtelegrams.”Healsoshower

6、endnamedWood.WooddiscoveredinapocketofthesuitletterswrittenbyWildetohisyouthfulfriend.Woodextorted£35fromWildeforreturnofmostofthecompromisingletters.WildelaterdescribedthemoneyasagifttoenableWoodtostartanewlifeinAmerica.Twootherwould-beblackmailersw
7、eregivensmalleramountsofmoneyafterreturningtheremainingletters.Wilde’sdownfallcamenotfromblackmailers,however,butratherthefatherofAlfredDouglas,JohnSholtoDouglas,theMarquessofQueensberry.Queensberrywasanarrogant,ill-tempered,eccentricandperhapsevenme
