3、romisingtwenty-two-yearoldpoetnamedLordAlfredDouglas(“Bosie”)atateaparty.Thetwobecameextremelyclose.DouglastookgreatpleasureintheinterestshowninhimbyWilde,alreadyamajorliteraryfigure.Douglascalledhiseldercompanion“themostchivalrousfriendintheworld.”WildesawinDou
4、glasnotonlyalivelyintellect,butayoungmanwithanAdonis-likeappearance.Wildemadenosecretofhisinterest.Douglaslatersaid,“Hewascontinuallyaskingmetolunchanddinewithhimandsendingmeletters,notes,andtelegrams.”HealsoshoweredDouglaswithpresentsandwroteasonnetforhim.Theys
5、tayedtogetherineachother’shousesandinhotels,andwentontripstogether.ThefirstseriousproblemforWildegrowingoutofhisrelationshipofDouglascamewhenDouglas,stillastudentinOxford,gaveanoldsuittoadown-and-outfriendnamedWood.Wooddiscoveredinapocketofthesuitletterswrittenb
6、yWildetohisyouthfulfriend.Woodextorted£35fromWildeforreturnofmostofthecompromisingletters.WildelaterdescribedthemoneyasagifttoenableWoodtostartanewlifeinAmerica.Twootherwould-beblackmailersweregivensmalleramountsofmoneyafterreturningtheremainingletters.Wilde’sdo
