1、6Stacking,tyingandstraighteningThischapterdescribesmethodsthatareincommonuse,whileChapter8describesanewmethodfortyingdownstrawbalewallsthathasmanyadvantagesovercurrentmethods.Intheliterature,somedescriptionsofwallconstructionmethodsarequiteextreme.Themethodspresentedhereare
2、chosenforsimplicity,easeofimplementationandstructuralintegrity.Mostadvocatedmethodssatisfythelastofthesecriteria,butsomeareseverelylackinginthefirsttwo.LayingthebalesBeforelayingthebales,enoughbalesshouldbepreparedforthewallsection,asdescribedpreviously,andatemporarymeanssh
3、ouldbeavailabletoconstrainthewalltopreventtheuntiedwallfromtoppling.Allthenecessarymaterials,toolsandcomponentstocompletethetie-downofthewallshouldbeonhand.Ifthereisanyriskofrainfallingonthewallbeforethewallistobeplastered,tarpaulinsorotherweatherprotectionmaterialshouldbea
4、vailable.Therearemanyreferencestopeopleallowingraintofallonunplasteredwallsandjustlettingitdry,butifthedryingisnotrapidsomedeteriorationwilloccur.Laythedampcourseontheraisedbase,whichhasbeenpreparedwiththechosenmethodofsecuringtie-downwires.Placebalesinarunningbondmanner(se
5、eFig.1,page5).Ifthebalesvarysignificantlyinlengthitmightbefeasibletoselectbalessothatnobalesneedtobecuttocompletealternatelayers.Nextcomesoneofthemoretime-consumingpartsofthequickestpartoferectingthewall:makingpart-bales(seepage24).Apart-balewillberequiredinatleasteachalter
6、natelayer,becauseoftherunningbondstructure.36PracticalstrawbalebuildingAfterensuringthatallfullbalesinalayerarefirmlypushedtogether,measurethelengthofthespaceremaining.Prepareapart-bale,makingthepart-balemarginallylongerthanthespacetobefilled,exceptforwallswithafreeend.Inth
7、ecaseofwallswithafreeend,ifthepart-baleissmallerthanahalf-balethepartbaleshouldnotbeplacedattheend,anditshouldnotbeveryclosetoacorner.Frequentlyduringerectionofthewallitshouldbecheckedforverticalityandstraightness.Aspiritleveland/orplumbbobareobviousnecessarytools,butonecan
