2、ttemptstotheorizethesocietalcountermovementagainstneoliberalismbyillustratingthecasesofKoreaandJapan.Polanyismainapproachwastosynthesizethreecriticaldomains:thestate,market,andsociety,andhisnotionofdoublemovementshouldbeunderstoodassuch.Predicatedonhisdoublemovement,Ianalyt
3、icallydecomposethemechanismofsocietalcountermovement,emphasizingtheimportanceofsocialorganizationsthataggregatepeoplesinsecuritiesandtranslatethemintoapoliticalvoicecapableofacquiringsocialprotection.ApplyingthisanalyticalframeworkofthedoublemovementtoKoreaandJapanrevealsth
4、attheproblemwiththeconventionalunderstandingofthedoublemovementisthatitnecessarilyarrivesatsocialcompensationequilibrium.Thispaperimpliesthatahighlycontentioussociety,likeKoreas,andahighlydocilesociety,likeJapans,maybothhindersocialwelfareprovision.KEYWORDS:Polanyi,doublemo

7、anyi,thatcivilsocietyinevitablyreactsagainstunfetteredmarketforcestoavoidmarket-relatedsocialrisks,andtopreservenecessarysocialfabricandnorms.Asaresult,thestateespeciallyincapitalistdemocraciesisundergreatpressuretoprovideadequatesocialwelfaretothosewhoareincreasinglyexpose
