4、nd,claimedthatMarxdidholdsuchaview.Hollanderthenwentontoarguethatthisviewde-pended,inawaythatMarxrefusedtoadmit,onthe“demographicvari-able”:Marx’sstricturesontheMalthusianswerethereforemisplaced.AccordingtoHollander,Marxdidnothaveaconvincingcasethatthedownw
5、ardtrendofwageswasindependentofpopulationgrowth,althoughthisiswhatMarxwishedtomaintain.Ramirez’scontributionwasintendedtoprovideadditionalsupportforBaumol’sposition-thatMarxrejectedanydoctrineofanecessarysecularfallinrealwages-whilesimultaneouslyattackingHo
