2、A.J.Thomson(1980)andA.V.Martinet(1980),thinkthatinfinitive,participle(-ingparticipleand-ed/enparticiple)andgerundarethreenon-finiteverbforms.ButothergrammarianslikeRandolphQuirk(1974;1980;1985),SidneyGreenbaum(1974;1980;1985),GeoffreyLeech(1980;1985),JanSvart
3、vik(1980;1985),etc.holdtheviewthatthereareonlytwonon-finiteverbforms–infinitiveandparticiple(ibid).Theyusetheterm“-ingclause”tocoverthetwoforms–-ingparticipleandgerundwholly,buttheysimultaneouslypointoutthat-ingclausescontainnominalcharacters.RonaldWardhaugh(
4、1995:25)mentioned“classboundaries”betweenverbalnoun(gerund)andadjectiveparticiple.JohnSinclair(1990)borrowstheterm“phase”toexplainthecollocationofverbsinasentence.RodneyHuddleston(1988:63)usestheterm“catenative”todiscusstheusagesofnon-finitecomplements,butinh
5、isbook“theCambridgeGrammaroftheEnglishLanguage”(2002:78-81)heusesothergrammaticaltermslike“gerundialnoun”,“participialadjective”,and“gerund-participleformofverb”todescribethecharactersofnon-finite-ingverbform.InChina,thesameviewsasmentionedabovealsoexistinmos
6、tEnglishgrammarbooks.ZhangDaozhen(1995)andBoBing(2004)approvetheclassificationgivenbyOttoJespersenetalfornearlyhalfacentury;WangJialing(1980)andZhangZhenbang(2003)agreetotheviewpointofRandolphQuirketal.Furthermore,inrecentyearssomekeyjournalsandperiodicalshav
7、eissuedmanyarticlestitledbythetermsofpresent/pastparticiple,gerundornominalizedverbalnounetc.,whichseemstoleadtochaosformostlearnersseekingtounderstandthe-ingverbform.Consideringthepartmentionedabove,thewriterofthispaperhasfoundthatthereisawidedisagreementamo
