2、A.V.Martinet(1980),thinkthatinfinitive,participle(-ingparticipleand-ed/enparticiple)andgerundarethreenon-finiteverbforms.ButothergrammarianslikeRandolphQuirk(1974;1980;1985),SidneyGreenbaum(1974;1980;1985),GeoffreyLeech(1980;1985),JanSvartvik(1980;1985),etc.holdtheviewthattherea
3、reonlytwonon-finiteverbforms–infinitiveandparticiple(ibid).Theyusetheterm“-ingclause”tocoverthetwoforms–-ingparticipleandgerundwholly,buttheysimultaneouslypointoutthat-ingclausescontainnominalcharacters.RonaldWardhaugh(1995:25)mentioned“classboundaries”betweenverbalnoun(gerund)a
4、ndadjectiveparticiple.JohnSinclair(1990)borrowstheterm“phase”toexplainthecollocationofverbsinasentence.RodneyHuddleston(1988:63)usestheterm“catenative”todiscusstheusagesofnon-finitecomplements,butinhisbook“theCambridgeGrammaroftheEnglishLanguage”(2002:78-81)heusesothergrammatica
5、ltermslike“gerundialnoun”,“participialadjective”,and“gerund-participleformofverb”todescribethecharactersofnon-finite-ingverbform.InChina,thesameviewsasmentionedabovealsoexistinmostEnglishgrammarbooks.ZhangDaozhen(1995)andBoBing(2004)approvetheclassificationgivenbyOttoJespersenet
6、alfornearlyhalfacentury;WangJialing(1980)andZhangZhenbang(2003)agreetotheviewpointofRandolphQuirketal.Furthermore,inrecentyearssomekeyjournalsandperiodicalshaveissuedmanyarticlestitledbythetermsofpresent/pastparticiple,gerundornominalizedverbalnounetc.,whichseemstoleadtochaosfor
7、mostlearnersseekingtounderstandthe-ingverbform.Consideringthepartmentionedabove,thewriterofthispaperhasfoundthatthereisawidedisagreementamongscholarsastotheclassificationofthenon-finitevii-ingverbformanditsusages.Thetermsandcharacteristicsofthe-ingformareoftenmixedandmisundersto
