2、thinkthatinfinitive,participle(-ingparticipleand-ed/enparticiple)andgerundarethreenon-finiteverbforms.ButothergrammarianslikeRandolphQuirk(1974;1980;1985),SidneyGreenbaum(1974;1980;1985),GeoffreyLeech(1980;1985),JanSvartvik(1980;1985),etc.holdtheviewthatthereareonlytwonon-finiteverbforms–infinitiv
3、eandparticiple(ibid).Theyusetheterm“-ingclause”tocoverthetwoforms–-ingparticipleandgerundwholly,buttheysimultaneouslypointoutthat-ingclausescontainnominalcharacters.RonaldWardhaugh(1995:25)mentioned“classboundaries”betweenverbalnoun(gerund)andadjectiveparticiple.JohnSinclair(1990)borrowstheterm“ph
4、ase”toexplainthecollocationofverbsinasentence.RodneyHuddleston(1988:63)usestheterm“catenative”todiscusstheusagesofnon-finitecomplements,butinhisbook“theCambridgeGrammaroftheEnglishLanguage”(2002:78-81)heusesothergrammaticaltermslike“gerundialnoun”,“participialadjective”,and“gerund-participleformof
5、verb”todescribethecharactersofnon-finite-ingverbform.InChina,thesameviewsasmentionedabovealsoexistinmostEnglishgrammarbooks.ZhangDaozhen(1995)andBoBing(2004)approvetheclassificationgivenbyOttoJespersenetalfornearlyhalfacentury;WangJialing(1980)andZhangZhenbang(2003)agreetotheviewpointofRandolphQui
6、rketal.Furthermore,inrecentyearssomekeyjournalsandperiodicalshaveissuedmanyarticlestitledbythetermsofpresent/pastparticiple,gerundornominalizedverbalnounetc.,whichseemstoleadtochaosformostlearnersseekingtounderstandthe-ingverbform.Consideringthepartmentionedabove,thewriterofthispaperhasfoundthatth
7、ereisawidedisagreementamongscholarsastotheclassificationofthenon-finitev-ingverbformanditsusages.Thetermsandcharacteristicsofthe-ingformareoftenmixedandmisunderstoodanditsusageshavealsoprovedambiguous.Franklyspea
