3、;1985),etc.holdtheviewthatthereareonlytwonon-finiteverbforms–infinitiveandparticiple(ibid).Theyusetheterm“-ingclause”tocoverthetwoforms–-ingparticipleandgerundwholly,buttheysimultaneouslypointoutthat-ingclausescontainnominalcharacters.RonaldWardhaugh(1995:25)ment
4、ioned“classboundaries”betweenverbalnoun(gerund)andadjectiveparticiple.JohnSinclair(1990)borrowstheterm“phase”toexplainthecollocationofverbsinasentence.RodneyHuddleston(1988:63)usestheterm“catenative”todiscusstheusagesofnon-finitecomplements,butinhisbook“theCambri
5、dgeGrammaroftheEnglishLanguage”(2002:78-81)heusesothergrammaticaltermslike“gerundialnoun”,“participialadjective”,and“gerund-participleformofverb”todescribethecharactersofnon-finite-ingverbform.InChina,thesameviewsasmentionedabovealsoexistinmostEnglishgrammarbooks
6、.ZhangDaozhen(1995)andBoBing(2004)approvetheclassificationgivenbyOttoJespersenetalfornearlyhalfacentury;WangJialing(1980)andZhangZhenbang(2003)agreetotheviewpointofRandolphQuirketal.Furthermore,inrecentyearssomekeyjournalsandperiodicalshaveissuedmanyarticlestitle
7、dbythetermsofpresent/pastparticiple,gerundornominalizedverbalnounetc.,whichseemstoleadtochaosformostlearnersseekingtounderstandthe-ingverbform.Consideringthepartmentionedabove,thewriterofthispaperhasfoundthatthereisawidedisagreementamongscholarsastotheclassificat
