2、inaAbstract—ThebeautyofTangpoetryisexpressedinthecombinationofcontentandform.Iftheformisnotwellreproducedintheprocessoftranslation,theintegrityofTangpoetrywouldbeimpairedtoagreatextent.BylookingatdifferenttranslationsofTangpoetry,itisfoundthatformalreproductionhappenswheret
3、herealreadyexistthesimilarpoeticformsinthetargetlanguage;suchformsaslinelength,poetictype,rhyme,rhythmandparallelismarefull-reproducible;suchformastonalpatternissemi-reproducible;andsomeforms,suchaspun,intertextualityandpalindrome,areirreproduciblebecausetheyarepeculiartoTa
4、ngpoetryandcannotexistoutsidelanguageduetothedifferencesoftwolanguages.IndexTerms—empiricalresearch,formaltranslation,TangpoetryI.INTRODUCTIONThispaperaddressesformaltranslationofTangpoetry(LüshiandJueju),withanintentiontorevealwhatformsofTangpoetrycanand/orcannotbereproduc
5、edinthetargetlanguage.InattemptingtounderstandtheformalpropertiesofTangpoetry,itisimportanttodefinetheformofTangpoetry.Generallyspeaking,theformofTangpoetryreferstoitspeculiarmetricalarrangementsandinherentelementswhichdistinguishTangpoetryfromotherliterarygenres,includingt
6、onalpattern,rhyme,rhythm,linelength,poetictype,andsomeotherforms,suchasparallelism,pun,intertextualityandpalindrome,whichcanberoughlyclassifiedintotwoforms:musicalform(tonalpattern,rhymeandrhythm)andvisualform(linelength,poetictype,parallelism,intertextualityandpalindrome).
7、ZhuGuangqian(2008)holdsthattheformofpoetryshouldbeconsideredasthesoulofpoetry.Amongalltheinformationcarriedbypoetry,thesenseorcontentismerelyakindoflow-levelinformation,whereasthestyleorform,suchassound,rhymeandrhythm,isakindofhigh-levelinformation.Intranslatingpoetry,ifatr
8、anslatoronlyreproducesthelow-levelinformation,whatistranslatedisnotpoetrybutprose.
