2、628and2)ResearchCenterforBiologicals,TheKitasatoInstitute,Kitamoto,Saitama364–0026,Japan(Received7June2005/Accepted16September2005)ABSTRACT.Caninecoronavirus(CCoV)hasbeenreportedtocauseacutediarrheamainlyinyoungpups.CCoVandfelinecoronavirusareclassifiedasgroup1coronaviruses.However,ith
3、asrecentlybeenreportedintheUnitedKingdomthatthegroup2coronavirusgene,whichismorecloselyrelatedtothebovinecoronavirus(BCoV)andhumancoronavirusstrainOC43,hasbeendetectedinrespiratorytracttissuesamplesfromdogswithrespiratorydisease.Inthisstudy,weexaminedtheprevalenceofantibodiestogroup2co
4、ronavirusesindomesticdogsandcatsinJapanbyaneutralizationtestusingBCoV.All104felineserumsampleswerenegative(<1:5)foranti-BCoVantibodies.Incontrast,ofthe898canineserumsamples,160(17.8%)werepositiveforanti-BCoVantibodies,andtheantibodytitersrangedfrom1:5tomorethan1:640,with1:160beingthemo
5、stfrequent.Nocorrelationwasfoundbetweenthetitersoftheanti-BCoVandanti-CCoVantibodiesinthe198serumsamplesofdogswithaknownhistoryofCCoVvaccination.Weamplified,byRT-PCR,group2coronavirus-specifichemagglutination/esterasegenesintheoralswabsofatotalof10youngpupspresentingwithorhav-ingrecove
6、redfromrespiratorysigns,orhavinganti-BCoVantibodies,withtheresultthat2pupswerepositiveforthehemagglutination/esterasegenes.Theseresultsstronglysuggestthatanunknowngroup2coronavirusaswellastheknownenteritis-causingCCoV(group1coronavirus)isprevalentamongdomesticdogsinJapan.KEYWORDS:bovin
