4、ntibodyasanindicator.ItwasdemonstratedthatfieldstratusoftheTGEV-relatedpor-cinerespiratorycoronavirus(PRCV)didnotinducethisantibody,whereastheMillerstrainandfieldstrainsofTGEVdid.ThesensitivityofthecompetitiveinhibitionELISAappearedtobesimilartothatofthevirusneutralization(VN)test.Thetest
5、enablesdifferentiationofpigswhichwerepreviouslyinfectedwithTGEVorPRCVandwhichcannotbedistinguishedbytheclassicalantl-TGEVneutralizationtest.Thepresenttestisusefulforselectiveserodiagnosis.INTRODUCTIONTransmissiblegastroenteritis(TGE)ofswineisahighlyinfectiousdiseasecausinghighmortalityinp
6、iglets<2weeksofage(DoyleandHutchings,1946).Thecoronaviruswhichcausesit,transmissiblegastroenteritisvirus(TGEV),replicatesintheabsorptiveepithelialcellsofthesmallintestinecausingde-generation,villousshorteninganddiarrhea(Haelterman,1972).Replicationinthetonsilsandintherespiratorytracthasbe
7、enreported,butappearstobesecondarytotheentericinfection(Kemenyetal.,1975;Furuuchietal.,1978/1979).Virusspreadroutinelyoccursbytheoral-fecalroute(Bohl,1981).In1986,aTGEV-relatedporcinecoronaviruswasisolated,whichcausesa0378-1135/89/$03.50©1989ElsevierScmncePublishers
