2、ncesarean-derivedcolostrum-deprivedpigletswereinfectedoronasallywithCV777coronavirusonthesecondorthirddayoflife.Twouninfectedpigletswerecontrols.Theywerekilledat96and120hoursafterbirth.Afteranincubationperiodof22to36hours,allprincipalsshowedseverediarrhea.The
3、principalswerekilledbetween12and120hoursafterinfection.Exfoliationofenterocyteswasseenfirstinthepigletkilled24hoursafterinfection(twohoursafterthediarrheabegan).Fromthattimeon,shorteningandfusionofvilliwaspresentinallsmallintestinalparts.Affectedcellsshowedva
4、cuolation.Thehistochemicalstudyshowedthatinfectedpigletshaddecreasedactivityofallfourenzymesstudied.Thelightmicroscopeshowednolesionsintheabsorptivecolonicepithelium.Thesignificanceofthelesionsinrelationtointestinaldysfunctionisdiscussed,andlesionsarecompared
5、tothoseoftransmissiblegastroenteritisandporcinerotavirusinfection.Viraldiarrheainpigsisknowntobecausedbytransmissiblegastroenteritisandrotavirus.Anatomicalstudiesontransmissiblegastroenteritis[1,12,16,21,24,261androtavirusenteritis[2,19,251arereportedfrequent
6、ly.Thesetwovirusesaffectthemucosalepitheliumofthevilliofthesmallintestine.Nolesionshavebeenseeninthecryptepithelium.Exfoliationofenterocytes,andshorteningandfusionofvilli,havebeenseen.In1978itwasreported[20]thatanothervirus,acoronavirus-likeagent,maybeinvolve
7、dinporcinediarrhea.Thisvirushasbeendifferentiatedantigenicallyfromtransmissiblegastroenteritisvirusandhemagglutinatingenceph-alomyelitisvirus[20].Intestinallesionscausedbythisvirusinhysterectomy-derivedcolostrum-deprivedpigsandinconventionalpigsincludedmarked
