2、vice,NationalAnimalDiseaseCenter,Ames,IowaAbstract.Coronavirustitersinsmallintestine,degreeofvillousatrophyandapparentratesofregenerationofintestinalvilliwerecomparedinnewborn,3-week-oldandadultpigsfor1weekaftertheywereexposedtothetransmissiblegastroenteritisvirusofswine.Ther

3、esponsewithinthenewborngroupwashomogeneous,resultinginhighvirustiters,maximalvillousatrophyandcomparativelyslowregeneration.Ingeneral,virustiterswerelower,villousatrophywaslesssevereandregenerationmorerapidinbotholdergroupsthaninthenewbornpigs.However,theresponsevariedgreatly

4、intheoldergroups.The3-week-oldgroupwasdividedintotwopopulations.Themajorpopulationhadlowvirustitersanddevelopedpartialvillousatrophy,whereastheminorpopulationhadmarkedvillousatrophyandvirustiterscomparabletothoseofthenewbornpigs.Theseobserva-tionssupportthehypothesisthattheac

5、celeratedreplacementofvillousepitheliuminthesmallintestineofpigsduringthefirst3weekscontributestotheinnateage-dependentresistancetotransmissiblegastroenteritis.Theacceleratedreplacementofvillousepithelialcellsinolderpigscontributestoresistanceintwoways.Theincreasedproliferati

6、vecapac-ityofcryptepitheliumresultsinamorerapidregenerationofatrophicvilli;andthecom-parativelyyoungvillousabsorptivecellsresultingfromacceleratedreplacementproducelessviruspercellthantheolderonesofthenewbornpig.Transmissiblegastroenteritisofswineisanacutediarrhealdiseasecaus

7、edbydestructionofabsorptiveepithelialcellsoftheintestinalvillibyaspecificcoronavirus.Theresultantlesioniscalledvillousatrophy.Cryptepitheliumisnotaffecteddirectlybythevirus,andintestinalvillirapidlyregenerateinpigsthatsurvivetheacutediarrhealphaseofthedisease[16].Acuteviraldi
