3、iccoronavirusshowedincreasingnumbersofparticlesinthefluids.Thinsectionsofthecolumnarepithelialcellsoftheseexplantsshowedanum-beroffeaturesconsistentwiththereplicationofknownhumanandanimalcorona-viruses.Virusparticlesfoundinthinsectionshadameandiametero
4、f68nm.Inaddition,astructurewasfoundinthinsectionswhichhasnotbeendescribedpreviously.Thisstructuremayrepresenttheviralnueleocapsid.IntroductionHumancoronaviruseshavebeenisolatedinhumanfoetaltrachealandnasalepitheliumorgancultureandinrnonolayercellcultur
5、es(1,4,10,12,16,20).Virionsobtainedfromtheseculturesshowedthetypicaleoronavirusmorphologybynegativestaining(3).Humancoronaviruseshavebeenstudiedextensivelybynegativestainingofcellandorganculturefluidsbutuntilrecentlyhavenotbeenseenordescribedinclinical
6、material(6).UltrastructurMchangesfollowingrepli-cationofcoronavirusesincellcultureshavebeenreportedbyanumberofworkers(15).However,therearenosimilarreportswhichdescribeultrastructurMchangesfollowingreplicationinhumanorgancultures.Thepresentelectronmicro
7、scopicalinvestigationwasundertakentostudythemorphologybynegativestainingofthenewlydescribedhumanentericcoronaviruses(5)andtocomparethemwithtwoanimalentericcoronaviruses,namely,transmissiblegastroenteritisvirus(TGEV)ofpigsandneonatalcalfdiarrhoeavirus.I
8、nadditionobservationsweremadeontheultrastructuralchangesassociatedwiththereplicationofthishumanentericcoronavirusinhumanfoetalintestinalorgancultures.Infectionoftheorgancul-tureswiththisnon-laboratoryadaptedvirusrepresentsamodelsystemas
