4、nmicroscopicobservationofthevirion.Theviruswasreadilyinactivatedbytrypsinandsodiumdeoxycholate.Theviruswaslabileat50°Cindilutedmedium,butreadilystabilizedinthepresenceofMgCI~.ItwasstableatpH5and7,whileaslightlossofinfectivitywasobservedatpH3.Theviruswasreadily

5、filteredthroughmembranefiltersof200and100-nmporesizes,butnotthrough50-amfilters.ThebuoyantdensityofthevirioninCsCIw~sestimatedtobe1.25g/m].INTRODUCTIONCalfdiarrheacoronaviruswasrecentlyrecoveredfromthefecesofcalveswithneonataldiarrheaandprovedtobeacausativeage

6、ntofthedisease(Stairetah,1972;Mebusetal.,1972,1973aandb;Sharpeeetal.,1976).Thevirusmultipliedinbovineembryonickidneycellcultures,butfailedtoinducereadilyrecognizablecytopathiceffect(Mebusetal.,1973a).Recent-lywehaveobsercedthatthevirusreadilyreplicatesandinduc

7、esamarkedIcytopathiceffectinculturesofacontinuouscellline,BEK-1,derivedfrovllbovineembryonickidney.Thisobservationhasprovidedasensitive,practicalassaymethod(Inabaetal.,1976),wherebythevirusanditsdiseasecannowbestudiedmoresystematically.Thepresentstudywasundert
