2、esultsontheProgramforMonitoringEmergingDis-eases(ProMED),anonlinedisease-reportingsystem,confirmingthatthecoronavirustestswerepositive.Aweeklater,Fouchier’sgroup,whichhadreceivedanisolateofthevirusfromZakiinearlyJuly,publishedthepathogen’sgenomesequenceintheGenBankdatabase.Thegenomeconfir
3、medthatthepathogenwasanewcoronavirus,theclosestrelativesofwhicharefoundinbats.TwodaysafterseeingZaki’sProMEDpost,theUKHealthProtectionAgencyreportedthatithadfoundasecondcase:a49-year-oldmanfromQatarwhofellillon3 Septemberwithsimilarsymptoms.HewasadmittedtointensivecareinDohaon7 Septembera
4、ndTheresearchlegacyoftheSARSvirus(pictured)ishelpingscientiststomovequicklyagainstanewthreat.thentransferredtoaLondonhospital,whereheremainsseriouslyill.ComparingafragmentBIOMEDICALRESEARCHofthegenomesequenceofhisviruswiththatofthefirstcaseshowedthatthetwowereidenti-cal.Theviralgenomesequ
5、encealsoenabledanSARSveteransinternationalgroupofresearchers,includingFouchierandDrosten,toquicklydevisediag-nosticteststhatlookforshort,characteristicstretchesofthevirus’sRNA.Thecollaborationtacklecoronaviruscameeasily,saysDrosten:“ThegoodthinghereisthattheseareallfriendsfromtheSARStime.
