2、us-containingelectron-densemembrane-boundcytoplasmicbodiesaredescribedintrachealepithelialcellsofchickensinfectedwithInfectiousBronchitisVirusandinintestinalepithelialceilsofswineinfectedwithPoreineEpidemicDiarrheaVirus.Usingsilver-methenaminestaining,phosphotungsticacidstainingandacidphosphat
3、aseenzymecytochemiealstainingofultra-thinsections,thesebodieswereshowntobevirus-containingsecondarylysosomesandresidualbodies.Theaccumulationofviralparticlesinthelysosomesissuggestedtopossiblyrepresentanintracellulardefensemechanism.However,nomorpholo-gicalalterationswerefoundindicatingadestru
4、ctionofthevirusesbythelyriclysosomalenzymes.IntroductionVirus-containingelectron-densebodies(VEB)ofavariablediameterareoftendescribedineelIsinfectedwitheoronaviruses(5,7,8,16,i9,22,24).Inspiteoftheirpleomorphism,thesebodieshaveanumberofcommoncharacteristics:theyareelectron-densestructures,limi
5、tedbyaunit-membraneandlocatedinthecytoplasm.Theirmatrixmaybeamorphousorgramllo-fibrillar.Theyseemtobeparticularlynumerousaftercoronavirus*PartofthisworkwaspresentedasathesisbeforethefacultyofVeterinaryMedicineattheStateUniversityofGent.1"2R.DUCATELLEandJ.11001~ENS:infectionofthenaturalhostcell
6、s(7,8,24),althoughtheyarealsoobviousaftereoronavirnsinfectionofcellcultures(5).Anumberofauthorshaveconsideredthesestructurestobeviralfactories(7,19,24).Nevertheless,thiswouldbeincontradictionwiththeideaofcoronavirusesbeingassembledexclusivelybybuddingthroughendoptasmicreticululnmembranes(23).T
