4、’scultureisasimportantasitsgrammarorvocabulary.Perhapsmoretothepoint,alackofcross-culturalawarenesscanbeaseverehindranceintheunderstandingofamessagewhichislinguisticallyaccurateorcomprehensible.Asarule,peoplearemuchlesstolerantofcultural“bumps”andculturalsho
5、cksthantheyareofgrammaticalmistakesandlexicalinsufficiency.Theword“culture”istoobroadtobedefinedinoneortwosentences.Here,theauthorusesitinitsnarrowsensewhichrelatestolanguageuse,i.e.,thewayoflife,theconventionsofbehavior,valuesystems,waysofviewingtheworldand
6、institutions.Languageisinseparablefromculture.Thus,whenlearnerslearnalanguage,theylearnaboutculture;andastheylearntouseanewlanguage,theylearntocommunicatewithotherindividualsfromadifferentculture.2.TheimportanceofculturalawarenessincommunicativecompetenceThe
7、study’sfocusoflinguisticsoncewassetonlanguageitself.“Langue”waspreferredto“parole”bydeSaussure(1916).EitherthestudyonAmericanStructuralismorthatonlinguisticcompetencebyChomskyignoredthesocialsituationandnormtosomedegree.Thesocial-linguistshiftedthestudyfroms
8、eparatedabstractlanguageformtotheactualuseinsocialcontext.Theterm“communicativecompetence”wasputforwardbyHymesin1971.Communicativecompetenceincludesbothlinguisticcompetenceandpragmaticcompetence
