2、iam(1884-1887).In1878,duringhisfirstperiodofstayingatJapan,SatowwassenttoKoreatoinvestigatethepeninsula,andwrotealongarticleaboutthegeographyofKorea.HespentmostofhislifeintheEasternAsia,andmasteredmanyorientallanguages.HewasregardedasoneoftheearlyfounderofthewesternJapanology,andrespectedbymanyJapa
3、neseandwesternscholarsandofficals.TherearestillalotofremainsofSatow'slifeinJapan.Forexample,thereisstilltheSakuratreeplantedbySatowinthefrontofthegateoftheBritishEmbassyinJapan.1.E.M.Satow’simagetowardsChina(1)whyIchooseSatow'sdiplomaticcareerinChinaasthethemeofmydoctoraldissertaion?Satowwasregarde
4、dasanfamousorientalistanddiplomatbytheWesternacademiccircle,mostofhisacademicbooksandhisdiplomaticcarrierwasresearchedbylaterscholars,however,hissecondperiodinChina(1900-1906)wasrelevantlyignoredbyWesternandJapanesescholars.AlthoughtherearesomeresearcharticlesonSatow’sdiplomaticexperienceduringthis
5、period,thisperiodisstilltheweakestpointofresearchesonSatow.ItisaverystrangephenomenathatthereisevennoonearticleaboutresearchonSatowinChinese,needlesstosayrelevantmonograph.InmodernChinesehistory,famousforeigndiplomatsandmissionariesplayedveryimportantrolesinChina’saffairs,andmostofthemwereremembere
6、dandresearchedbyweChinesescholars,however,Satowwasanexception.ComparedwithacademicresearchesonSatow’sexperienceinJapan,hisexperienceinChinawasrelevantlyignored.ThereareonlysomearticlesonhisexperienceinChina(1900-1906)whicharewroteinJapaneseorEnglish,however,thesearticleshavesomeobviousshortages.Fir
7、st,theseauthorsdidn’tobtainbasicknowledgeaboutChina’smodernhistory,sotheycouldn’twellunderstandthepoliticalsituationoflateQingDynasty.Second,theseauthorscouldn’tcollectallChinesematerials(orarchives)concern
