1、ChapterIIIStylisticMeaningsofEnglishWordsI. Bystylisticmeaning,Englishwordscanbeclassifiedintothefollowing5types:1.Commonwords:Commonorpopularwordsarewordsconnectedwiththeordinarythingsoractivitiesnecessarytoeverydaylife.ThegreatmajorityofEnglishwordsarecommonwords.Thecoreof
2、commonwordsisthebasicwordstock(whichismadeupofnativeEnglishwords).Theyarestylisticallyneutral,andthereforetheyareappropriateinbothformalandinformalwritingandspeech.Takethefollowingsentenceforexample,“Therepeatedtelephonecallsonlyannoyedmebutmademysisterveryangry.”Allthewords
3、inthesentencearecommonwords,andsothissentencecouldbeusedinbothspeechandwriting,andonformalandinformaloccasions.2.Literarywords:Literarywordsarechieflyusedinwriting,especiallyinbookswritteninamoreelevatedstyle,inofficialdocuments,orinformalspeeches.Theyarecomparativelyseldomu
4、sedinordinaryconversation.JustasFowlerpointsout:“…aministeroftheCrownmayforeseetheadvantageofhispolicyandoutlineittohiscolleaguesbutinpresentingittoParliamenthemayvisualizethefirstandadumbratethesecond.”Thecommonwordsforeseeandoutlineareappropriatewhenoneistalkingorwritingto
