1、DEVELOPMENTREPORTAnancientcommunityinBotswanahaslaunchedanewprogramthatwillhelpdevelopmentinthatsouthernAfricancountry.TheBukakhwe(Bu-KA-kweh)SanBushmenhaveopenedacenterforvisitorscalledGudigwa(goo-DEE-gwa)Camp.Theprojectwillteachvisitorsfromothercountriesabouttheanci

2、entSancultureandwillprotectwildanimalslivinginthearea.Thiskindofprojectiscalledecotourism.TheSanculturedatesbackthousandsofyears.Thepeoplesupportthemselvesbyhuntingandeatinglocallygrownplants.Bukakhwehunters,orBushmen,areconsideredexpertsatsearchingforanimals.Theyhave

3、theabilitytodiscoverthemovementsofanimalsfrommarksleftinthesand.BukakhweleadershopetoprotectandcontinuetheirtraditionsthroughtheGudigwaCamp.Sixteenpeoplewillbeabletovisitthecampatonetime.TheywillstayingrasshutsmodeledaftertraditionalSanBushmenshelters.Localcommunityme

4、mberswilltakevisitorsonwalks.TheywillteachthevisitorsaboutSanculture,usingplantsformedicine,gatheringwaterduringthedryseasonandtraditionalstorytelling,songsanddance.TheinternationalenvironmentalgroupConservationInternationalandtheorganizationWildernessSafarishelpedthe

5、BukakhweBushmenlaunchGudigwaCamp.TheprojectisfullyownedbytheBushmen.Allmoneymadefromthecampwillbereinvestedintocommunitydevelopmentprojects.ThegoalofthecampistoreducepressureonwildanimalsinBotswana'sOkavango(Oh-ka-VAN-go)areabyprovidingotherwaysfortheBukakhwepeopletoe

6、arnmoney.Hunting,increasedhumansettlementsandmorefarmanimalshavethreatenedmanyofthearea'srareanimals.AmongthethreatenedanimalsaretheAfricanelephant,theAfricanwilddogandwildbirds.PelonomiVenson(Pee-la-NO-MayVIN-son)istheMinisterforEnvironment,WildlifeandTourisminBotswa

7、na.ShesaysGudigwaCampisasociallyresponsibleprojectthatisgoodforeveryone.Thecommunity,shesays,willbeabletocontinueitsancientcustoms.VisitorswillexperiencetherichcultureoftheBukakhweSanBushmen.AndthewildanimalsinnortheasternBotswanawillbeprotected.
