2、esmanyscholarshaveadoptedacompanyperspectiveofinternationaltradebyattemptingtoinvestigatetheforcesinhibitingthefirmstoinitiate,developorsustainexportoperations.However,thevastmajorityofstudiesinvestigatethebarriershinderingtheexportpossibilitiesofmanufacturingfirmsfromadevelopedcountry(L
3、eonidou,2004).Thefocusofresearchonadevelopedcountriescontextimposessomelimitationsonthegeneralizabilityofthefindings.Hence,tohaveacompletepictureonthesubject,itisessentialtoconductresearchonthebarriersencounteredbythedevelopingcountryexporters.Microlevelstudiesareimportantfordevelopingco
4、untriesinparticularbecausemostofthepoliciesinthesecountriesdonotstemfromfirmlevelproblems.Policymakersoftenlacktheinstitutionalenvironmentthatenablestheassessmentofthestateoftheartofmanufacturingfirmsintheircountries,whilefirmshavenoorganizationthatdefendtheirinterestsinthefaceofthepolic
5、ymakers.Severalstudieshavebeenpublishedthatshowhowexportproblemsaffectmanufacturingfirmsfromdevelopingcountries(WeaverandPak,1990;Bodur,1986;Karafakioglu,1986;Colaiacovo,1982;FigueiredoandAlmeida,1988;BrooksandFrances,1991;KalekaandKatsikeas,1995;BurgessandOldenboom,1997).Althoughwefound
6、articlesthatfocusonaregionalcontext,wedidnotcomeacrossanarticlethatclassifiestheexportmarketingproblemsofsmall-andmedium-sizedmanufacturingfirmsfromdevelopingcountries.Wethusbelievethatbynowenoughbodyofliteratureisavailablebutwhatisneededistosystematicallysynthesizethisliteraturetodetect
