2、ultureisthehighestnetforeignexchangeearnerinSriLanka.Oftheagriculturalexports,teaalonecontributesabout15-25%ofthetotalexchangeearningsand,hence,playsakeyroleintheSriLankaneconomy.About30%oftheemployeesofthepublicsector(governmentandsemigovernment)aremanualworkersonestates,andthe
3、majorityoftheseareemployedonteaplantations.Moreover,about239,000teasmallholdingsalsogeneratealargeproportionofemploymentopportunitiesinthecountry.Accordingly,morethan700,000workersandtheirfamiliesaredependentontheteaindustry.Thesefiguresshowtheimportanceoftheteaindustrytothesoci
4、alandeconomicstabilityofSriLanka.Inspiteoftheexpansionofthesmallholdingssector,inSriLanka,thetotalareaofteaplantationshasdecreasedsincethe1930s,i.e.,fromabout0.44to0.23x10sha.Thedeclineintheestatesectortealandsbeganearlyinthe1960s,becauseoflowproductivitybroughtaboutbysoilandbus
5、hdebilitation.Manyofthemidcountry(600-1,200melevation)teaplantationshavenowbecomemarginal,warrantingcropdiversification.Adversitiesofweatherandpoormanagementpracticeshavebeenblamedforthissituation;changesinthemicroclimateinteaplantationsaftershaderemovalduringtheearly1960shaveal
6、soaffectedtheproductivityoftheteabushes(Fuch,1989).Someadverseeffectsofthenationalizationoftheplantationsinthe1970s,suchastheneglectofagriculturalpractices,contributedtothedeclineintheestatesectorproduction(Fuch,1989).BeingarainfedplantationcropinSriLanka,teadependsgreatlyonweat
7、herforoptimalgrowth.Therefore,changesinweatherconditionswouldundoubtedlyaffectteaproduction.Therelationshipbetweenteayieldandweatherhasbeendiscussedbymanyresearchers(e.g.,Devanathan,1975;KandiahandThevadasan,1980;CarrandStephens,1992).ThefindingsofthisstudydifferfromthoseoftheSr
