2、ianSMEsIndianindustryisundergoingamajorchangeduetotheliberalization,privatizationandglobalization(LPG)oftheeconomy.AccordingtoarecentsurveybyMcKinseyandtheConfederationofIndianIndustry(CII),manyinvestorsandcorporateorganizationsfromdevelopedeconomiesarelookingatIndiaasoneoftheb

3、estlocationsfortheirglobaloperations.TheiroleofSMEsisbecomingincreasinglycrucialformeetingthegrowingdemandofbothdomesticandoverseasfirmsoperatinginIndia.TheSMEsthatsurvivedthedownturnin1990shaveemergedascompetitiveglobalplayers.Indianautocomponentmanufacturershavebeensuccessful

4、lysupplyingcomponentstomanydomesticcustomersaswellasOEMs(originalequipmentmanufacturers)suchasFord,GeneralMotors(GM),DaimlerChryslerandFiat.Autocomponentmanufacturers(ACMssuchasDelphi,Visteon,CaterpillarandCumminshavestartedprocuringcomponentsfrommanySMEsinIndia,whichtheyfindca

5、pableofmeetinghighqualitystandardsatcompetitiveprices.Manysmallandmediumsizeorganizationsareonthewaytobecomingmediumandlargerones.ManySMEsarealsotryingtheinitialpublicoffer(IPO)channeltoraisefundsbutthecapitalmarketisstillnotSME-friendly.TheinherentstrengthSMEsandtheirpotential

6、forgrowthhavenonethelessstartedwinningthemthesympathyofmanybanks,financialinstitutions(FIs),statefinancialcorporations(SFCs)andothersupportagencies.ThefactorsthataccountforthestrengthsandopportunitiesofIndianSMEsincludetheirhighcontributiontodomesticproduction;thesignificanceof

7、theirexportearnings;thelowthresholdintheirinvestmentrequirements;theiroperationalflexibilityandlocationnon-specificity;theirlowimportcontent;theirabilitytodevelopanduseappropriateindigenoustechnologiesandtheircontributiontoimportsubstitution.AspartofthepolicydrivetosupportSMEs,
