3、theoreticalandempiricalstudieshaveexaminedthechallengesandopportunitiesfacingtheChinesebankingindustryfrom1990s(e.g.Xu,1998;Lardy,1998;Huang,1998;Chen,et.al.,2005;FuandHeffernan,2007).AcriticalanalysisoftheChinesebankingsectorinthebroadcontextofChina‘sac
4、cessiontotheWTOandeconomicreformishighlysignificant.Alargebodyoftheoreticalandempiricalstudieshaveestablishedthatgreaterfinancialdevelopmentfostersgrowthandthatfinancialdevelopmentisrelatedtoacountry‘sinstitutionalcharacteristics,includingitslegalframewo
5、rk(LevineandHaubrich,2004).Across-countryliteraturehasfoundthatgrowthinexternaldependentsectorsisfasterwithmore-competitivebankingsystems(ClaessensandLaeven,2004).Well-developedfinancialmarketsmakeiteasierforfirmstoattractneededfinancing(RajanandZingales
6、,1998)aswellasforimprovingtheoveralleconomicefficiencythroughrisk-taking,risk-sharingandrisk-reductionmechanismsofferedbythemodernbankingandfinancialfacilities.Althoughsomeoftherelationshipsbetweencompetitionandbankingsystemperformancehavebeenanalysedint
7、hetheoreticalliteratureandevenempiricallyinsomecountrystudies,cross-countryempiricalresearchhassofarmainlyinvestigatedtheeffectsofregulationsandspecificstructuralorotherfactorsonbankingperformance.Forexample,inabroadsurveyofrulesgoverningbankingsystems,B
