5、ofinanceinstitutions(MFIs)reportthatasofDecember31,2000,over30millionfamilieshadaccesstomicrofinanceservices,ofwhichmorethan19millionqualifiedaspoorest.Thisisbothencouraginganddaunting.Encouragingbecausethenumberhasincreasedsubstantiallysince1997,whentheMic
6、rocreditSummitCampaignwaslaunched.Dauntingbecausethatstillleaves81millionpoorestfamiliestobereachedby2005iftheCampaigntargetof100millionofthepoorestistobeachieved.Onaregionalbasis,coverageremainsextremelylow.InAsia,wherealmost15millionpoorestfamilieshaveacc
7、esstomicrofinanceservices,stillonly9.3%ofallpoorestfamiliesarebeingreached.AndinAfricaandLatinAmerica,only6%ofallpoorestfamilieshaveaccesstofinancialservices.StateoftheMicrocreditCampaignReport2001,p11.Itisnotsurprising,therefore,thatNGO-MFIswantingtoincrea
