3、issionforEurope(2001),sincethisdefinitiondoesnotemphasizeaconnectiontoseaportsnordoesitspecifytherangeofservicesofferedattheterminals.BeresfordandDubey(1990),intheirextensivesurveyofdryportsinAfrica,useadryportdefinitionthatcorrespondstothedefinitionofanInlandClearanceDepot,according
4、toUNECE(1998).Theirdefinitionisveryspecificregardingownershipandservices,inparticularcustomsclearance,althoughwithnospecificationofthetypeofconnectiontoaseaport.Furthermore,BeresfordandDubey(1990)emphasizetheimportanceofadryportasacommonuserfacilitythatwouldpromotethetransferofgoodsf
5、romorigintodestinationwithoutanintermediatecustomsexamination,theso-calledthrough-transportconcept.Terminalsasphysicalplantsthatmeetthebusinessneedsofaspecificmarketplacemaytakemanyforms,dependingonthecharacteristicsofthelandscape,theirproximitytotheseaportandtheirlocationrelativetot
6、hemainrailinfrastructure.Thisconsciousandstrategicdevelopmentofintermodalterminalsintheseaport’shinterlandisapproachingwhatwedenoteasdryports.Basedontheresearchfindings,thefollowingdefinitionwasformed:Adryportisaninlandintermodalterminaldirectlyconnectedtoseaport(s)byrailwherecustome
