3、swhowereinvolvedinthisindustryinvariousways,describessomeoftheseexperiencesandpointstothechallengesahead.1.INTRODUCTORYREMARKSBeginninginthelate1990's,wehavebeenwitnessingthebuddingofanewindustry:EnterpriseInformationIntegration(EII).Thevisionunderlyingthisin
4、dustryistoprovidetoolsforintegratingdatafrommultiplesourceswithouthavingtofirstloadallthedataintoacentralwarehouse.Intheresearchcommunitywehavebeenreferringtotheseasdataintegrationsystems.ThiscollectionofarticlesaccompaniesasessionattheSIGMOD2005Conferenceinw
5、hichtheauthorsdiscussthesuccessesoftheEIIindustry,thechallengesthatlieaheadofitandthecontroversiessurroundingit.Thefollowingfewparagraphsserveasanintroductiontotheissues,admittedlywiththeperspectiveoftheeditor.Severalfactorscametogetheratthetimetocontributeto
6、thedevelopmentoftheEIIindustry.First,sometechnologiesdevelopedintheresearcharenahavematuredtothepointthattheywerereadyforcommercialization,andseveraloftheteamsresponsibleforthesedevelopmentsstartedcompanies(orspunoffproductsfromresearchlabs).Second,theneedsof
7、datamanagementinorganizationshavechanged:theneedtocreateexternalcoherentwebsitesrequiredintegratingdatafrommultiplesources;theweb-connectedworldraisedtheurgencyforcompaniestostartcommunicatingwithothersinvariousways.Third,theemergenceofXMLpiquedtheappetitesof
