3、gaudiestnewhotels.Theover-hastyunconsciousthenrapidlyassemblestheimageofasmall,painstakinglyreproducednostalgiarestaurant—decoratedwiththeoldphotographs,withSovietwaiterssluggishlyservingbadRussianfood—hiddenawaywithinsomegleamingnewpinkandbluearchitecturalextr
4、ava-ganza.IfImayindulgeapersonalnote,ithashappenedtomebeforetohavebeenoddlyandcomicallyidentifiedwithanobjectofstudy:abookIpub-lishedyearsagoonstructuralismelicitedletters,someofwhichaddressed31measa‘foremost’spokespersonforstructuralism,whiletheothersappealedt
5、omeasan‘eminent’criticandopponentofthatmove-ment.Iwasreallyneitherofthosethings,butIhavetoconcludethatImusthavebeen‘neither’insomerelativelycomplicatedandunusualwaythatitseemedhardforpeopletograsp.Asfaraspostmodernismisconcerned,anddespitethetroubleItookinmypri
6、ncipalessayonthesubjecttoexplainhowitwasnotpossibleintellectuallyorpoliticallysimplytocelebratepostmodernismorto‘disavow’it(touseawordtowhichIwillreturn),avant-gardeartcriticsquicklyidentifiedmeasavulgar-Marxisthatchetman,whilesomeofthemoresimpleheartedcomrades
7、concludedthat,followingtheexampleofsomanyillustriouspredecessors,Ihadfinallygoneoffthedeependandbecomea‘post-Marxist’(whichistosay,arenegadeandaturncoat).IamthereforeparticularlygratefultoDougKellnerforhisthoughtfulintroductorydemonstrationofthewaysinwhichthisn
