3、it’sclearthatcertainpreoccupationsandmethodolo-atSichuanUniversityonOctober18,2010gical/theoreticalapproacheshavegreatercurrencythanothers.Inthis,ourfinalyearofreviewingtheselinkedresearchfields,wewantnotonlytofocusontheyear’sworkin2006butalsotohighlightwh

4、atseemtoustohavebeenthekeyover-ridingconcernstohaveemergedduringthelastthreeyears.Itgoeswithoutsayingthatourremarksaren’tintendedtobedefinitive;wemakenopretencetohavecoveredeverythingthat’sbeenpublished(andofcourseitshouldbenotedthattheyear’sworkcoversmon

5、ographs,notarticlesinacademicjournals)butwehopetohaveidentifiedatleastsomeofthemostabsorbingtrends.Tworeallyobviousfeaturesofrecentresearchinthefieldofmodernismstandout:thefirstisitsconcernwithmaterialpractices;thesecondisitscommitmenttoseeingmodernismaspar

6、tofawidediscursivefield.Thesetwopreoccupationsfrequentlygotogetherandinformeachother.Thedaysinwhichmodernismwasviewedprimarilyinaestheticterms(thelegacyoftheNewCriticsandScrutineersloominglarge)reallyarelonggone.Now,everybodyissuper-keentoshowhowmuchtheyh
