2、ofthehistoricaldevelopmentofforeignlanguageteachingbecauseofitspoordocumentation.Tofacilitateourdiscussion,wewillarbitrarilydividetheshorthistoryinto4periodsandintroducethemaintrends,eventsandimportantfiguresinthoseperiods.TheReformMovement(1882-1906)Bytheendofthe18thcentur
3、y,nearlyalltheEuropeanlanguageshadbeenstudiedasforeignlanguagesinschools.Theprincipalaimofforeignlanguageteachingatthattimewastohelplearnerstoacquireareadingknowledgeofthetargetlanguages.Tosatisfytherequirementsofgroupteachinginschools,Grammar-TranslationMethodwasdevisedand
4、developed.Forthenextscoresofyears,Grammar-TranslationMethoddominatedtheforeignlanguageteaching.Althoughtherewereindividualendeavorstoreformtheforeignlanguageteachinginthoseyears,noneofthemwassuccessfulinshakingthepositionoftheGrammar-TranslationMethod.However,theyhelpedtopa
5、vethewayfortheReformMovement.Then,inthesecondhalfofthe19thcentury,ascommunicationsamongtheEuropeancountriesbecamemoreandmorefrequent,peoplewerenotsatisfiedwithamerereadingknowledgeofforeignlanguages.Theywantedtobeabletotalkinaforeignlanguageandtheybecomemoreandmoreintereste
6、dinreformingtheteachingmethods.Amovementofreformstartedallofasudden.Theprinciplesofthemovementweretheprimaryofspeech,andtheabsolutepriorityofanoralmethodologyintheclassroom.Morelanguageteachingandresearch(1906-1940)TheteachingofEnglishasasecond/foreignlanguageinBritainmadeg
7、reatprogressduringthisperiod.Itbecameanautonomousprofessionandproducedanumberofworld-famousscholars.DanieJoneswasthefirstonethathelpedtomakeaprofessiontheteachingofEnglishasasecond/foreignlanguageandbecamewell-knownintheworldbecauseofhisresearchontheprofession.Inthespringof
