3、y1989andJanuary1990.ThestudywascarriedoutintheFina-LaterreMarshManagementAreaandtheRockefellerStateWildlifeRefugeinmanagedandunmanagedareas.Waterandmaterialfluxwasmeasuredeachtwohoursduringtwelve48hfluxstudies,andnetfluxesperm2ofdrainageareawerecalculatedforwater,totalsusp
4、endedsediments,salinity,N03+NO2,PO4,andNH4.Short-termsedimentationwasmeasuredastheweightofmaterialdepositedover2--4weekintervalsonpetridishesplacedonthemarshsurface.Themanagedsitesexperiencedconsiderablereductionsintotalwaterexchange,leadingtoreductionsinnetmaterialexchang
5、es.Whenexpressedonaperm2basis,themanagedwetlandsaremuchlesstightlycoupledtothesurroundingestuarycomparedtotmmanagedareas.Withinthecontextofageneraldecreaseofexchange,thetwomanagedareasonaverageexportmaterialstotheestuary.Inthemanagedareas,theresultssuggestthatmanagementcan
6、leadtoreducedsalinityandalossofsedimentsandnutrients.Short-termsedimentationwaslessatthemanagedareas;expressedasgm-2d~,totalsedimentationrateswere0.57forFinamanaged,1.02forFinaunmanaged,1.68forRockefellermanaged,and3.82forRockefellerunmanaged.SoilPwaslowerandsoilorganicmat
7、terwashigheratthemanagedareas.Organicmatterinthesoilwaslowcomparedwithrecentlydepositedmaterial,suggestingthatmostorganicmatterdepositedonthesurfaceofthemarshislostthroughdecomposition.Reductionoffloodingduringstormeventsisthelikelymechanismleadingtoreducedsedimentationont
