4、ivityintheLakeTahoeBasinhasincreasedsubstantiallyinthepastfourdecades,causingsignificantimpactsonthequalityandclarityofthelake'sfamousdeep,clearwater.ProtectionofLakeTahoeandthesurroundingenvironmenthasbecomeanimportantactivityinrecentyears.Avarietyofagen
5、cies,includingtheTahoeRegionalPlanningAgency,TahoeResearchGroupoftheUniversityofCaliforniaatDavis,DesertResearchInstituteoftheUniversityandCommunityCollegeSystemofNevada,U.S.GeologicalSurvey(USGS),andahostofState(bothNevadaandCalifornia)andlocalagenciesha
6、vebeenmonitoringandconductingresearchintheBasininordertounderstandhowthelakefunctionsandtowhatextenthumanshaveaffecteditslandscapeandecosystemprocesses.Inspiteofalloftheseactivities,thereremainsalackofcomprehensivelandusechangedataandanalysisfortheBasin.A
7、projectisunderwaythatunitesthelandcovermappingexpertiseoftheUSGSNationalMappingDisciplinewiththehydrologicexpertiseoftheWaterResourcesDisciplinetoassesstheimpactsofurbangrowthandlandusechangeintheLakeTahoeBasin.Threeactivitiesareplannedoverthenext3years:(
8、1)mappingthecurrentandhistoricstateofthelandsurface,(2)conductinganalysistodocumentpatterns,rates,andtrendsinurbanization,landusechange,andecosystemhealth,and(3)assessingthecausesandconsequencesoflandusechangewithre
