2、sthesinglemostimportantquestionthatManagementandOrganizationReviewissetuptoaddress.Acomplexquestionsuchasthisonetypicallyengendersdiverseviews,andtherehasbeenanongoingdebateaboutthebestwayforward.ThecruxofthedebatecentersonwhetheritismoreproductivetofocusonuniversalorChina-specific(
3、indigenous)managementtheories(e.g.Barney&Zhang,2009;Cheng,Wang,&Huang,2009).TheindigenousapproachrequirestheadoptionofChineseperspectivesinconceptualizingresearchproblemsandformulatingtheo-ries(fordetail,seeLi,Leung,Chen,&Luo,2012).Thereisaconstantpleaforattentiontocontextinmanagem
4、entresearch,andweshouldalsoputthisdebateincontext.TheU.S.hasbeenthedominanteconomicpowerafterWorldWarIIaswellasthedominantsourceofmanagementresearchandtheories.DespitethemonumentalworkofHofstede(1980)onculturaldimen-sions,mostresearchersdonotworryaboutwhetherresearchandtheoriescomi
5、ngoutoftheU.S.contextwouldgeneralizetootherculturalcontexts.TherehasnotbeenanysignificanttrendtorequireresearchandtheoriesdevelopedintheU.S.contexttotakeintoaccounttheirrelevanceandapplicabilityinotherculturalcontexts.Incontrast,indigenousresearchandtheoriesdevelopedintheChinesecont
6、exttypicallygenerateaknee-jerkreactionabouttheirpotentiallackofgener-alizabilitytootherculturalcontexts.Asanillustration,papersbasedonU.S.datatypicallydonotcarryadisclaimerabouttheirpotentiallackofgeneralizabiliytootherculturalcontexts,whereaspapersbasedonChinesedatausuallyincludea
