4、USAABSTRACTThestudyofinstitutionshasalonghistory,butrecenteffortsstressthesignificanceofsymbolicelementsinshapingsociallife.Althoughinstitutionalprocessesandstructuresoperatefromthemostmicrointerpersonalleveltothemostmacrotransocietallevel,mostresearchduringthepastfewdecadeshasconcentrate

5、donhigherlevels,suchastheorganizationfield.Institutionalscholarshiphasbeenstronglyinfluencedbystructurationtheoryand,asaconsequence,hasgivenincreasingattentiontoprocessesofinstitutionalreinforcementandchange.Directionsofdevelopmentshowingpromiseincludeattentiontointermediariesinfields,socia
