2、novercost,qualityofcareandprofessionaldevelopment.Background.Ahighturnoverrateofnursesisacommonglobalproblem.Howtoimprovenurseswillingnesstostayintheirjobsandreducethehighturnoverratehasbecomeafocus.Well-designedpreceptorshipprogrammescouldpossiblydecreaseturnoverratesand

3、improveprofessionaldevelopment.Design.Aquasi-experimentalresearchdesignwasused.Methods.First,apreceptorshipprogrammewasdesignedtoestablishtheroleandresponsibilitiesofpreceptorsininstructingnewnurses.Second,aquasi-experimentaldesignwasusedtoevaluatethepreceptorshipprogramm

4、e.Dataonnewnursesturnoverrate,turnovercost,qualityofnursingcare,satisfactionofpreceptorsteachingandpreceptorsperceptionweremeasured.Results.Afterconductingthepreceptorshipprogramme,theturnoverratewas46Æ5%lessthanthepreviousyear.TheturnovercostwasdecreasedbyUS$186,102.Addi

5、tionally,medicationerrorratesmadebynewnursesdroppedfrom500%andincidentratesofadverseeventsandfallsdecreased.Allnewnursesweresatisfiedwithpreceptorguidance.Conclusions.Thepreceptorshipprogrammeeffectivelyloweredtheturnoverrateofnewnurses,reducedturnovercostsandenhancedthequ

6、alityofnursingcare,especiallybyreducingmedicationerrorincidents.Positivefeedbackabouttheprogrammewasreceivedfromnewnurses.Relevancetoclinicalpractice.Studyfindingsmayofferhealthcareadministratorsanotheroptionforretainingnewnurses,controllingcosts,improvingqualityandfosteri
