3、llocatedimmenseresourcestothosetwotheaters.Inthenext10years,weneedtobesmartandsystematicaboutwhereweinvesttimeandenergy,sothatweputourselvesinthebestpositiontosustainourleadership,secureourinterests,andadvanceourvalues.OneofthemostimportanttasksofAmericanstatecraftoverthenextdecadewillthereforebeto
4、lockinasubstantiallyincreasedinvestment--diplomatic,economic,strategic,andotherwise--intheAsia-Pacificregion.TheAsia-Pacifichasbecomeakeydriverofglobalpolitics.StretchingfromtheIndiansubcontinenttothewestern1shoresoftheAmericas,theregionspanstwooceans--thePacificandtheIndian--thatareincreasinglylin
5、kedbyshippingandstrategy.Itboastsalmosthalftheworld'spopulation.Itincludesmanyofthekeyenginesoftheglobaleconomy,aswellasthelargestemittersofgreenhousegases.ItishometoseveralofourkeyalliesandimportantemergingpowerslikeChina,India,andIndonesia.Atatimewhentheregionisbuildingamorematuresecurityandecono
6、micarchitecturetopromotestabilityandprosperity,U.S.commitmentthereisessential.ItwillhelpbuildthatarchitectureandpaydividendsforcontinuedAmericanleadershipwellintothiscentury,justasourpost-WorldWarIIcommitmenttobuildingacomprehensiveandlastingtransatlanticnetworkofinstitutionsandrelationshipshaspaid
7、offmanytimesover--andcontinuestodoso.ThetimehascomefortheUnitedStatestomakesimilarinvestmentsasaPacificpower,astrategiccoursesetbyPresidentBarackObamafromtheoutsetofhisadministrationandonethatisalreadyyieldingbenefits.2WithIraqandAfghanistanstillintransitionandseriouseconomicchallengesinourowncount
