2、herdistinctionsaremadeinthealienablecategorybutnotintheinalienablecategory.Thepresentresearchteststhehypothesisthatthereisagoodmotivationforsuchadevelopmentintheformercase.AsEnglishdoesnothaveagrammaticalizeddistinctionbetweenalienableandinalienablepossession
3、,itprovidesagoodtestingground.Threestudieswereconducted.InStudy1,participantswereaskedtowritedownthefirstinterpretationthatcametomindforpossessivephrases,someofwhichcontainedinherentlyrelationalpossessums,whileotherscontainedpossessumsthatarenotinherentlyrela
4、tional.Phraseswithnon-relationalpossessumselicitedabroaderrangeofinterpretationsandalowerconsistencyofagiveninterpretationacrosspossessormodifiersthanthosewithrelationalpossessums.Study2demonstratedthatusersassignadefaultinterpretationtoapossessivephraseconta
5、iningarelationalpossessumevenwhenanotherreadingisplausible.Study3,acorpus-basedanalysisofpossessivephraseuse,showedthatphraseswithrelationalpossessumshaveanarrowerrangeofinterpretationsthanthosewithotherpossessums.Takentogether,thefindingsstronglysuggestthatg
