3、o.InthefirsttwodecadesaftertheSecondWorldWar,fewhumangeographerswouldhaveidentifiedthemselvesassocialscientists:theirswasasomewhatsmallandintroverteddisciplinewhosestrongestexternallinkswerewithgeologyandhistory.Similarly,itisdoubtfulwhetheranymembersofothermemberdisciplinesconsideredge
4、ographytofallwithinthesocialscientificorbit.Althoughtherearestillsomelingeringdoubtsastowhetherhumangeographyisasocialscience(asexemplifiedbythelackofanycoverageoflinksbetweenitandsociologyinHalseyandRunciman,2006),however,thereisnowgeneralacceptancewithinthedisciplinethatthegreatmajori
5、tyofitspractitionersarecorrectlysituatedinthesocialsciences(somethingthatwasmuchresistedwhengeographersbelatedlyobtainedrecognitionbyandentrytotheSSRCinthelate1960s:Chisholm,2001;Johnston,2004b):some,mainlyhistoricalgeographers,identifymorestronglywiththehumanities,andtheyhavegainedreco
6、gnitionfortheirworkwithintheAHRC.Understandingthenatureofthechangesthathavetakenplace,andthegrowingpluralismthathascharacterisedhumangeography,especiallysincethe1970s,requiresanappreciationofthecontext,notjustthewiderintellectualmilieuxwithinwhichgeographywassetinpost-warUKsocietybutals
7、otheparticularinstitutionalsettingsexperiencedbyhumangeographers.Thenatureofthatinstitutionalcontextissetoutinthefirstsectionofthispaper,asaprefacetoanoutlineofthechangesthathavetakenplace.Afurtherpaper,presentedasanappendixtothispaper,discussesthepoliticsofhowthechangeshaveocc
