4、ntextofHungaryonthecuspofaccessiontotheEuropeanUnion.Firstitwillarguethattheconceptofacivilsocietyisinfactnotaunitaryonebut,rather,aclusteroflinkedconcepts.Itwillarguefurtherthatitisessen-tialtodeconstructthisclusterofconceptsinordertodevelopacommonlan
5、guage.Withoutsuchalanguageitisnotpossibletodebatetheachievementofacivilsociety,orotherwise.Thisarticleisacontributiontothedevelopmentofsuchconceptualclarity.Second,thisarticlewillarguethat,withinthetransitionalsocieties,itisneces-sarytorevisefurtherthe
6、conceptofacivilsociety.Aswillbediscussed,duringthecommunistera,acivilsocietywasinvariablydefinedinopposition,orincontrast,tothestate(andsometimestotheeconomy).Thisarticlewillarguethat,forthetransitionalnations,thisdistinctionisnolongersoclear-cut.Thisp
