2、I.Introduction1Thispaperevaluatestheimpactofalarge-scalesocialexperiment(theAligningLearningIncentives,orALI,program),involving88MexicanFederalhighschools,designedtopromotemathematicsachievementthroughperformance-basedmonetaryincentives.Highschoolswererandomlyallocatedto
3、threetreatmentgroupsandacontrolgroup.Treatmentone(T1)providesindividualincentivestostudentsonlyandtreatmenttwo(T2)toteachersonly.Treatmentthree(T3)o¤ersbothindividualandgroupincentivestostudents,teachersandschooladministrators,thusrewardingcooperationamongalloftheeducati
4、onactorsintheschool.Animportantrationaleforutilizingmonetaryincentivesratherthaninterveningintheeducationalprocessdirectlyisthatpolicymakersarenotlikelytoknowthebestmeansofimprovingeducationgiventheheterogeneousattributesofstudents,teachersandadministra-torsacrossschools
