3、pendentofvariationsinphotosyntheticprimaryproduction.ThisstudyexaminedspatialandtemporalvariationinthereproductivedevelopmentandpopulationstructureofthecarideanshrimpAlvinocarisstactophilaattheBrinePoolcoldseepontheLouisianaSlope.Toassessspatialvariation,sampleswerecollectedb
4、ysubmersiblefromdifferentlocationsacrosstheBrinePoolmusselbedinNovember2003.Theproportionofmalesinsamplesdeclinedfromtheoutertotheinnerzoneofthemusselbed,whiletheproportionoffemaleshrimpcarryingeggsincreased.Thiszonationmayhaveresultedfromthecongregationoflargeovigerousfemale
5、stowardstheinnerzone,wheresulphidefluxfromunderlyingsedimentsmaybeabsentorreduced.Toexaminetemporalvariationinrepro-ductivedevelopment,oocytesize-frequencydistributionswerecomparedbetweenAugust1997,March2002,February2003,November2003,andJuly2004.Alloocytesinearlyspringsamples
6、weresmallandprevitellogenic,whilesummersamplescontainedlargervitellogenicoocytes.Thelargestoocyteswerefoundinlargenon-ovigerousfemalesfromtheautumn,whereasovigerousfemalesfromthesameseasoncontainedthesmallestoocytesobservedinthisstudy.Embryosintheautumnexhibitednodifferentiat
7、ion,incontrasttowell-developedembryosfromearlyspringthathatchedintozoealarvae.ThesefeaturesindicatedseasonalanditeroparousreproductioninA.stactophila,withfemalescarryingembryosfromautumntoearlyspring,possiblytimingthereleaseofplankto-trophiclarvaetoexploitaseasonalpeakinsurfa
