2、ity,Xi‘an,ChinaABSTRACTAmericanPresidentialInauguralAddressisanimportantvarietyofpoliticalpublicspeech.Manyresearchershavealreadyfocusedonthestylisticanalysisofpresidentialinauguraladdresses;theyaremostlyqualitativeresearches,aimingattheexplorationofgeneralsynchronicstylisticfeaturesofA
3、PIAs.Meanwhile,therearesomequantitativestudiesonAPIAs,buttheyfocusonacertainaspectofstylisticanalysisorapresident.Andmostoftheseresearchesrefertoafewrhetoricaldevicesonlybriefly.ThisresearchaimsatgeneralstylisticfeaturesofAmericanpresidentialinauguraladdressesandthelinguisticchangesofAm
4、ericanpresidentialinauguraladdressesfromadiachronicperspectivefromthesedimensions:lexicallevel,syntacticallevel,textuallevelandalsodiscussesrhetoricaldevicesusedinpresidentialinauguraladdresses.The56speechesaredeliveredby44Americanpresidentsfrom1789to2008.Byapplyingtheoriesofmodernstyli
5、sticsandbasedontheapproachproposedbyCrystalandDavy,thepaperchooses10samplesaccordingtotimeintervalsof24yearsfromallthespeechestoanalyzewithdetailfromthedimensionsoflinguisticdescription,includinglexicallevel,syntacticlevel,andtextuallevelaswellrhetoricaldevicesandtheirrhetoricaleffectiv
6、eness,andtorevealthegeneraltendencythatisreflectedintheaddresses.Themajorfindingsofthisstudyareasfollows:Atthelexicallevel,hardwordsarefrequentlyused;thoseearlyaddressesemployedlotsofhardwords,andthemeanofthoseFogIndexeswasveryhigh;whilethenumberofthemissmallintheselateraddresses;thesea
7、reshowingadecliningtendencyonthewhole.Asfornominalization,becauseoftheoccasion‘sformality,nominalizationisoftenemployed;thepercentageofnominalizationwashighinthoseearlyaddresses,whileitgetsdecreasedintheselateraddresses.So,presidentshavebeentryingtomakethemmorecasualbyemploying
